Haggai 1:3-9, “[3] Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: [4] “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin? ” [5] Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. [6] You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.” [7] This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. [8] Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored, ” says the Lord. [9] “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house.”

Our key passage probably resonates with a lot of us who struggle to make the ends meet. We work hard, we sacrifice a lot and yet we are unable to save, seems like we are putting our money in ‘purses with holes’.

Usually when some preacher talks about our financial woes we know he is going to talk about tithing and how that is the key to our financial blessings. There are no two ways about it, it definitely is the key to unlocking financial blessings but it is not the only thing.

Tithing is just one part of our service towards God, but more than the money God is interested in you!

He is interested in how much you love Him, how faithfully you follow His word, how passionate you are about Him. Are you zealous for Him or as I love to say, are you bonkers about Him?

The passage that we read from the Book of Haggai is a direct talk where God tells us the reason why our blessings have disappeared, because we are more busy in our lives than focusing on the temple of God!

Though the conversation was about an actual temple however in today’s time, that temple is you!

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 clearly says that, “[19] Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; [20] you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

We have been taught since our Sunday school days that we honour God in our body by not sinning. True but incomplete!

We are constantly bombarded with temptations to sin and if we think that we can resist all the temptations then we fool ourselves. We maybe able to resist temptations like not using abusive words or getting high by taking drugs but what about feeling jealous on seeing someone else getting promotion! How do you resist that?

The answer to that is found in verse 8 of our key passage, “Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored, says the Lord.”

God has given us the key to how we build ourselves, this temple of God, get timber from the mountain. Not from the plains but mountain.

What does the mountain symbolise? The throne of the Most High God or in other word His presence. Timber is the basic building material for any building. Timber for us would be the promises and the word of God.

You can read the Bible all you want and it will have zero impact on your life unless you read it in the presence and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

We all would have met at least one person who has read the Bible atleast 10 times but their life would not exhibit any traits which are there in Bible. Why? Because their timber is from plain (world) and not from mountain (God’s presence).

We need to daily go to the mountain to get timber which will build us. This is a daily process, not once a month, not for only Sundays.

Holy Bible is a collection of 66 books which have been inspired by the Holy Spirit and for us to understand and claims the truths and promises mentioned in the Bible we need the Holy Spirit.

When we start receiving the promises of God, start living our lives the way God wants us to, we start building the temple of God. The moment we start building the temple of God, ourselves, our bodies, God will reside in our lives. His presence would be visible in every aspect of our lives and His blessings would be there on us and on all of our possession.

You want to secure your future, you want your hard work to show results, you want to seal all the holes in your purse, all that is required is that you go to the mountain of God and get timber daily for building the temple of God!

God bless you!
