Today we would look at the life of a man from Old Testament whose works complemented his faith so beautifully that even God was willing to wage a bet on him!
Yes, you heard it right! God waged a bet with Satan on Job and won!
This is an amazing story from the life of Job and how God gave him triple protection and double blessings!
We would read from the Book of Job found in the Old Testament today to learn more about him and from his life’s story.
Job 1:1-3 says There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters. His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
Here was a man who was extremely wealthy, had everything one would desire at that time YET his confidence was not on his wealth but GOD. Usually, whenever a famous man is introduced (even today) their financial status is always quoted first, eg: “introducing billionaire xyz” or “introducing the world’s richest man…” but Bible has a very different and beautiful introduction for Job, ‘one who was perfect & upright, feared God and eschewed evil’. There are very few people in Bible for whom the word ‘perfect’ is used and Job was one of them.
Job was no preacher, saint, pastor, evangelist, prophet, he was a very successful businessman. Many a times we feel that God only loves those who serve him fulltime, yet here we get to know about Job, a businessman who just goes about his life and is yet loved by God and the secret to that is explained in verse 1, upright and perfect, feared God and eschewed evil. Hence it does not matter which profession we are in, if we also live our lives the way Job did then God would always love, bless and protect us.
Let’s move a bit ahead and see the conversation between God and Satan. Job 1: 6-10, Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
Here we get to see the Triple Protection that God had on Job’s life, “hedge around him”, “hedge about his house” and “hedge about all he had on every side”
Wow! What an amazing protection Job had, insomuch that even Satan confessed about it!
This Triple protection was not only around Job but even today is around all who fear God, are upright in heart, perfect in the way they lead their lives and those who hate evil.
The insurance companies of the world offer us protection but they only compensate for what we lose, God’s protection plan ensures that we do not lose anything at all!! It’s a one of a kind protection plan, freely available for all if they make God the cornerstone of their lives and like Job walk a sin free life ,love and fear God.
Had the verse stopped there we would have assumed that God protected all that Job earned, that would make God sort of a ‘security person’, one who protects what we have but no, the verse says that God has blessed the work of Job’s hand!
Hallelujah! Not only does God protects us and all we have, he even blesses the work of our hand so that they multiply! Isn’t this amazing, beautiful, desirable?
The story in the Bible continues that Satan challenges God that Job loves God because He has blessed him and not the other way around and God agrees to remove his protection from Job’s life to prove to Satan that Job loves Him even if he has nothing.
We all know the story how from being the richest man, Job loses everything, his wealth, his sons and daughters, even has boils on his skin but still did not curse God.
He even uttered a statement of faith which is very famous even today. Job 1:21-22, And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
Amazing, Job’s faith on God was so strong and so true that despite facing such huge turmoil he did not blame God.
What do we do when we come into an uncomfortable situation? Do we start asking, “Why me Lord!”, do we start cribbing to the world about the miseries we go through or do we like Job say, “the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord!”
Bible tells us that Job’s faith on God helped him not to say anything against God even when his wife and his friends provoked him to do so.
We fast-forward to Job 42: 10:13, And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before. Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold. So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses. He had also seven sons and three daughters.
Three things on which I would like to focus your attention to from this passage:
- Lord gave Job TWICE as much as he had before! Double Blessing…Job never doubted God, his works, his speech complemented his faith hence God blessed him with double portion of what he had lost.
- God put in the hearts of all his brothers, sisters, all his acquaintances to go and meet him. they had not gone to him before but God initiated a blessing plan for him. God can use anyone to bless you, encourage you only if you are anchored in him.
- Why this was not a coincidence but God’s plan, is because all of them bought him a piece of money and an earring of gold! Now tell me have you ever been to a gathering, a party where all guests bring the exact same thing in exact same quantity!! This was nothing but God’s blessing plan on Job’s life.
God restored all that Job and lost and even doubled it and all because he kept God first in all he did and did not do anything which would hurt God but walked in perfect obedience to God’s word!
Do you desire to be doubly blessed and triply protected? If yes, then Job’s book in the Bible tells us how that would happen because God is no respecter of person but looks at the heart. I Samuel 16:7 says, But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
This is my sincere prayer for all (including me) that we start living a life acceptable to God, a life where our heart is right with God, so that we also are protected by God and blessed by him.
God bless you!
